Good Luck and Practice Hard.

 Risk vs. Skill Level:

There is a fine line between the amount of risk you should take and your skill level. And more times than not, golfers take too much risk. I have set up an example below to illustrate my point.
My ball lies short of the green behind a bunker and the pin is in the back corner of the green. To get the ball close to the hole I have to hit a high pitch shot that lands softly with very minimal roll. This is a high risk shot that demands a high level of skill. These are the questions you must ask yourself;

  • Can I hit the shot?
  • What is my success rate for this shot?
  • How confident am I hitting this shot?

If your answers are; yes, more than 70%, and highly confident, then take option #1 and aim at the hole and hit the shot, option #1.
If your answers are; yes, less than 60%, and somewhat confident, then take opotion #2.
If your answers are; no, no chance, and zero confidence, then you want to take option #3.

 Option #1:
Aim at the flag and hit the high soft shot. A miss hit here, leave it short in the bunker or go long over the green, brings double bogey and possibly triple bogey into play.

Option #2:
Aim over the bunker, but away from the flag to the fat part of the green. Hit a normal pitch and try and make a putt, two putting for sure. Take double bogey out of play, make a bogey for sure.

Option #3:
Aim away from the bunker to the very front of the green. Try and two putt from there making a bogey, a the worst you three putt for a double.

Each option requires less skill than the previous one and has much less risk. Remember the goal of golf is to shoot the lowest score possible, so think about how much risk you are willing to take before you decide which shot to hit.
